Happy February! The last month of winter. The definition of February comes from the latin word Februarius, meaning month of purification. In ancient Roman, February was named after the feast of purification and may celebrations were held to realign the Empire’s focus on virtuous living.  From romantic blooms to woodland scents the floristry team share what’s on their radar for the month ahead.

The month of February, and specifically Valentine's Day is about sharing your love and affection. Valentine’s day is named after the Christian priest, Valentine who defied the Roman Emperor Claudius II’s order of banning young soldiers from marrying. Valentine married many young lovers in secret, when these illegal unions were discovered he was arrested and executed. Before his execution on the 14th February, Valentine left a note to a girl he had befriended in prison, signed ‘for you Valentine’.

In the spirit of love, we’re setting the mood with our Gypsy Rose arrangements, the blush pinks, deep reds and burnt orange colour palette sets the tone for a intimate and romantic month ahead.

The full moon in February is known as the Snow Moon, named after the snow on the ground.  While some Native American tribes named it the Hunger Moon, due to the lack of food resources and the harsher conditions during the cold winter months. Other names include Quickening or Storm moon. The full moon for February will be on 19th and rise in Aquarius. It will be the biggest super moon for 2019, bringing good luck, optimism, generosity and happiness. We love Caroline Z Hurley’s moon inspired hand crafted quilts, perfect for staying cozying during the cold Winter nights.

For this month, we’re inspired by one of our favourite writers, British textile designer and poet William Morris. The extract from Morris’s iconic verse, The Earthly Paradise: A Poem above, shares our thoughts of the last month of Winter.

Late February days; and now, at last, Might you have thought that winter’s woe was past; So fair the sky was, and so soft the air.

With the spirit of romance on our minds, we’re treating our loved to a night at the ballet. Immerse yourself in the glamour of the roaring twenties in F.Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the timeless novel is now a thrilling ballet production.  What could be more romantic than an evening of arts and culture.

In ode to the month of purification, we’re trying to follow a greener lifestyle, starting with shopping habits. The recently opened Slowood, a sustainable lifestyle grocery store in Kennedy town has everything you need to lead a zero waste lifestyle. The clean, minimalist space stocks eco-focused products from bulk buy dry goods, natural beauty and biodegradable daily home essentials.

For us, February’s scent is all about woodland walks and cabin hideaways, taking in the last of crisp Winter air before the start of Spring, surrounded by the sharp and refreshing odours of the woods . There’s nothing more satisfying that coming in from the chilly outdoors and warming yourself up in front of an open fire, continue the woody scent at home with our Archangel candle, containing notes of fir needle and lime. If you’re looking for an alternative date idea, invite your loved one on a relaxing afternoon woodland walk .
